The Townsville Crocodiles were formed 1993 and played their first season in the National Basketball League the same year.
The club was intially called Townsville Suns and had their name changed in 1998. The main reason behind this change was that the "Suns" trademark was held by the Phoenix Suns (of NBA fame) and they demanded royalties off the Townsville Suns for using their trademark.
